Matthew Arbuckle was born
in Greenbrier County, (West) Virginia in 1776. He entered the
United States Army as an ensign in 1799, became a captain in 1806, a
major in 1812 and was commissioned as colonel of the 7th U. S.
Infantry regiment in 1820. In 1830 he was brevetted brigadier
general. he was in command of the military forces stationed in
the eastern part of the present state of Oklahoma for nearly twenty
years. He died at Fort Smith, Arkansas, June 11, 1851.
In April, 1824, Fort
Gibson was established by Colonel Matthew Arbuckle, of the 7th U. S.
Infantry. This post was located on the Neosho (or Grand) River a
short distance above its mouth.
