Dayton - Philippi. Judge U. S. Dist. Court.
Born in Barbour co., W. Va. Oct 18, 1857. Educated
in the public schools and at W. Va. University graduating in
the Class of '78. Studied law with his father, Spencer
Dayton; admitted to the Bar, 1878; began practice at
Philippi. Pros. Atty of Upshur Co., on year, and of
Barbour Co. four years. Elected to Congress in 1894;
Re-elected in 1896, 1898, 1900, 1902, 1904. Appointed
Judge U. S. Dist. Court 1905. Interested in banking and
coal interests in the State. Member of K. of P. and
I.O.O.F.
