General Henry Leavenworth
General Henry Leavenworth
was born at New Haven, Connecticut, December 10, 1783, and died in
camp in Oklahoma, probably near the present site of Pauls Valley, July
21, 1834. He was a veteran of the War of 1812, and had long
served on the frontier.
In the course of his
service he established several military posts in the West, including
Fort Leavenworth, which was named in his honor. This post
(established in 1827) is one of the oldest and most important military
stations west of the Mississippi.
