Stand Watie

Stand Watie was born at Rome, Georgia, in 1815.  He was a full blood Cherokee, a younger brother of Elias Boudinot and a nephew of Major Ridge.

He was an influential member and leader of the tribe.  He became Colonel of the 1st Cherokee Regiment (Confederate) in October, 1861, and a brigadier general in the Confederate Army, May 10, 1864.  He died in August, 1877.
