He remained in Government service until the Fall of
1865, when he engaged in mercantile pursuits with his father and brother until 1870, when
he became interested, in company with J. M. Bishop, under the name of Bishop & Heisel,
and afterward the Commercial Oil Company, in the refining of petroleum for illuminating
purposes. He continued in this until the Spring of 1883, when he sold his interest, and has
since remained out of active business.
His religious preferences are decidedly liberal, as he confesses a leaning toward
Ingersollism. In politics, he is a Democrat.
He was married August 7, 1867, to Miss Catherine Eliza Cogan, of Cleveland, Ohio.
They have two children: Julia, born July 13, 1869, and Henry, born December 25, 1871.
