One suggestion is that the name comes from the Indian term meaning A Place of Rest. According to the Alabama state website, Alabama was the name of an early Indian tribe that inhabited the the area that is now central Alabama at the time of the early European explorers. The first settlement in 1702 at Mobile Bay was established by the French. Alabama Territory was created in 1817 and became the twenty-second state on December 14, 1819. Alabama has had five capitals since becoming a territory. The first territorial capital was Saint Stephens in southwest Alabama. The current capital has been Montgomery since 1846. Alabama seceded from the Union in 1861, and Montgomery was named the capital of the Confederate States of America.
