Maryland History and State Facts
Maryland is bounded by on the North by
Pennsylvania, on the East by Delaware and the Atlantic Ocean, on the
South by the District of Columbia, and on the South and West by
Virginia and West Virginia.
In 1632, the Charter for Maryland was
granted to George Calvert, the first Lord Baltimore. Maryland was named in honor of Queen
Henrietta Maria, wife of Charles I. George Calvert died
before the charter was completed, but his son, Cecilius Calvert, the
Second Lord Baltimore developed the colony.
