• The first English colony was established in North Carolina in 1585 on Roanoke Island.
  The people of the colony vanished in 1587. What happened to them remains a mystery.

• One of the original 13 colonies.

• North Carolina was the first colony to vote for independence from England in 1776.

• Became the 12th State on November 21, 1789.
• First settled by the English about 1663 near Albermarle.
• State capital is Raleigh.

• 1890 Population   1,617,947
• North Carolina seceded from the Union on May 21, 1861.
• The Wright Brothers first flight took place in North Carolina.
