New York History and State Facts
New York bounded on the North by the
province of Quebec, on the East by Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut,
and the Atlantic Ocean, on the South by New Jersey and Pennsylvania, on
the North and West by Lakes Erie and Ontario and the Canadian province
of Ontario.
New York was named in honor of the Duke
of York, who became James II. New York was first settled by the
Dutch in 1623 near Fort Orange (Albany).
