South Carolina, the Palmetto State, is bounded by the
Atlantic Ocean on the southeast, North Carolina on the north and
northeast, and Georgia on the southwest. In 1788 South
Carolina was the eighth state to ratify the Constitution, and in 1790 moved its seat of government from Charleston to the
new city of Columbia. It is bordered by North
Carolina (N), the Atlantic Ocean (SE), and Georgia (SW).
