Virginia History and State Facts for Genealogy

Founded May 14,1607 at Jamestown, Virginia was the first permanent English settlement in America.  The first settlers were led by John Smith.  By 1619 the colony had its own representative assembly and a growing tobacco industry.  Most of eastern Virginia was settled first by the English. It is bounded on the East by the Atlantic Ocean, on the South by North Carolina and Tennessee on the West by Kentucky and West Virginia, and on the North and Northeast by Maryland and the District of Columbia.
