Martha Jane Bryaant "Aug. 3, 1772" Virginia "Virginia, maybe Kentucky" "Had a son out of wedlock with Robert Robertson, son of James Robertson and Margaret Poage. Robert was born in Elliston, Virginia, went to Kentucky in 1790's. Was in Red Banks (now Henderson) Kentucky, working at Billy Robertson Saltworks in 1797. He later moved to Providence, Hopkins County, Kentucky. He was a farmer and surveyor. He married Louisa Sugg. They had no children. He died in 1837 in Providence. Louisa died in 1855.

The son of Martha Jane Bryant and Robert Robertson was Solomon George Bryant. The story in the family Bible is that the ""wealthy and influential"" Robertsons, who were landowners, court justices, sheriffs, etc., in Virginia, disapproved of a marriage between Martha Bryant and Robertson. The reason why is not known, but the implication is that she was not of a wealthy or influential family. Perhaps it was something religious (the Robertsons were Presbyterian), or something ethnic (the Robertsons were Scotch-Irish; one family tale cast Martha as an ""Indian Princess"").

According to the family Bible, Robertson ""offered him [Solomon] land"" to take the family name, but Solomon refused because of the way his mother had been treated. Nonetheless, in his will, Robertson left all his land to ""the sons of Solomon Bryant"", after his wife's death.

Solomon and Robertson were both in Hopkins County, Kentucky, up through the 1830 census. Solomon's sons were named for Robertson and his brothers.

Solomon married Lavinia Roberts, b. 1813 Cumberland Gap.

There was also in Hopkins County at the same time as Solomon and Robertson a Thomas Briant, and Solomon's last name on the censuses was Briant, but on later censuses was Bryant.

Don't know who Solomon lived with as a child. Don't know when or where his mother died. There was no adult female, except Solomon's wife, in his household in 1820. In 1830, there was an older female, but it is not known who. It might have been his mother-in-law, Charity White Roberts, who was alive.

There is no record yet found of Martha Jane Bryant except in the family Bible." Andrea Ramsay aramsay@onemain.com
