Class of 1867
SAMUEL HOYT TROWBRIDGE
Mr. Trowbridge was born in
Bethel, Conn., September 12, 1840. He died in Glasgow, Mo.,
March 17, 1886.
For two years. after his
graduation he taught in the Drew Ladies’ Seminary, Carmel,
N. Y.; but in 1869 he accepted a position as Teacher of
Natural Science in the Pritchett Collegiate Institute,
Glasgow, Mo., and most of the active work of all his after
life was done in connection with that institution.
During his college days he had become much interested in
scientific studies, and after leaving college he bent all
his energies to scientific work. Gaining leave of
absence from his duties in Missouri, he studied, at two
different times, for somewhat more than a year each time, in
the Lawrence Scientific School of Harvard University, and
for a time was Assistant in the Harvard Geological Museum.
During the year 1873-4 he was engaged upon the Geological
Survey of the State of Missouri, and he has published
numerous occasional papers on scientific subjects. He
was a patient and careful collector and investigator; and,
he brought together at the Pritchett Institute scientific
collections which for richness, variety, and excellent
classification are said to be “unsurpassed in the West.”
Personally Mr. Trowbridge was
a modest, unassuming man, but of warm affection and
genuinely unselfish disposition. He was always much
beloved by all those who had the privilege of knowing him
intimately. He was a sincere and earnest Christian, an
active and influential member of the Methodist Episcopal
Church. The approach of the fatal disease to which he
succumbed made it evident some months ago that his career
must soon close. It was a grievous disappointment to
him; but he bore it with Christian resignation, and met the
end with a glad and unwavering Christian hope.
