EDGAR BANKS WAKEMAN
Mr. Wakeman was born in Monticello, Sullivan Co,, N. Y., in
1816; he died at the residence of his niece, in Bloomfield, N. J., November 5,
1885.
Mr. Wakeman entered upon the practice of the law in Jersey City, N. J., in the year 1843, and for many years was one, of the most successful and influential lawyers in that city.
He was City Clerk of Jersey City from 1845 to 1848, was a member of the Board of Aldermen for three years, and for a considerable period served as Corporation Attorney.
About 1860, he virtually withdrew from the practice of the law before the courts, but continued to be actively interested in public matters.
He was an earnest and influential member of the Republican party from the time of its organization, and in 1864 was the Republican candidate for Congress from his district.
He was an able lawyer, a man of positive opinions, and of much energy of character.
