Anson H. Bigelow
Supt. of Schools, Lead, S.
D.
Born in Illinois in 1867;
educationally, he is the product of the Chicago schools, Omaha High
School and the University of Nebraska, graduating therefrom in the
classes of 1884 and 1887 respectively. For nearly twenty years
he has been in charge of school systems, beginning with two teachers
and now having forty-four teachers under his supervision. He has
had charge of the schools successively at Greeley, Aurora, Minden and
Falls City, Nebraska; Le Mars, Iowa, and Lead, S. D. He is the
joint author of an "Arithmetic of Business: for use in high
schools. Has lectured before teachers' institutes for many on
"The Schools and Individual Initiative" and "The
Demands of the Future on the Schools of the Present."
Since Mr. Bigelow took
charge, the Lead school system has passed through a period of
organization along all lines. The financial methods of the board
have been systematized and modernized and the school has been
gradually equipped in all departments. The library has been
increased by over 3,000 volumes, the laboratories fitted with ample
apparatus, a business department with well appointed fixtures added, a
studio and music quarters fitted up, the gymnasium equipped with the
best apparatus, and departments established of mechanical drawing,
domestic science and manual training with the best type of fittings
obtainable. A course of study has been introduced into the
grades which gives unusual flexibility. This, together
with quarterly classification of pupils, permits large adaptability to
the individual.
