Graduated from Michigan
University (Ph. B.) in 1871. Taught in Whitestown, N. Y. and in
Dexter, Mich. Began teaching in Yonkers in November, 1892, in
the grammar grade. Two years later advanced to academic work in
the same school, and was also Vice-Principal of the school, which was
the largest in Westchester county. When the schools of Yonkers
were consolidated into a city system in 1881, he became Principal, and
in 1882 was appointed Principal of the high school. Was elected
Superintendent in 1883, which position he has since held. The
school system has grown rapidly under his administration. During
his first year there was an enrollment of 2,500 with 43
teachers. The enrollment is now more than 11,000 with over 300
teachers. Departments of manual training, drawing, sewing and
cooking have been established, and the high school prepares for
college or technical school, besides having commercial and other
departments.
