H. P. Lewis

Born
in Claremont, N. H., July 28, 1849; attended a district school; fitted
for college without a teacher, and graduated from Dartmouth in
1874. Had charge of Pinkerton Academy, N. H., 1874 - 76; of a
grammar school in Davenport, Iowa, 1876-8; of the Davenport High
School, 1878-83; of the Omaha, Neb., High School, 1883 - 1896; of the
Worcester English High School, 1896-1901; of the Worcester South High
School, 1901-1903; Superintendent of the Worcester schools since
April, 1903. The Omaha High School had 80 pupils when he took
charge in April, 1883, and an enrollment of 1,204 when he left Omaha,
in March 1896. The Worcester South High School was opened in
September, 1901, and had 600 pupils in 1903. Manual training was
introduced into the Omaha High School while he was Principal.
Sewing has been introduced into the Worcester schools since he became
Superintendent and Manual training and cooking have been extended.
He assisted in the
preparation of Larned's History of England, and edited Miles Standish
for the Macmillan Company; lectures upon "Moral Education,"
the "Study of Geography' and other subjects.
